Your first cup of coffee is a necessity to get your morning moving — and you know just how you like it. While some people prefer black coffee, most of us like something much paler and loaded with flavor.

But store-bought coffee creamers have tons of sugar and fat, not to mention countless scary, preservatives and dyes. Get a little heavy handed with the creamer and you could quickly add several hundred calories to your cup o joe. But this doesn’t mean you have to go without. You just have to make your own.

Try this healthy coffee creamer recipe at home. You can then continue to make your coffee as light as you would like without killing your healthy diet.

How to make your own healthy non-dairy coffee creamer

Step 1: In a stainless steel pot, over medium heat, pour 2 cups of non-dairy milk.

Step 2: Add 2 to 4 tsp of your favorite sweetener (brown sugar, honey, or maple syrup). Adjust the amount of sweetener to your taste.

Step 3: Keep a close eye on the pot to make sure it doesn’t boil. Continue to stir until sweetener has dissolved completely.

Step 4: Either keep this as a basic creamer by cooling and storing in the fridge for the week, or continue on with step 5 to add flavors.

Step 5: Add in flavors and stir. Here are a few recipes:

Pumpkin spice

  • 2 tbsp canned pumpkin
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp cloves

Cinnamon Vanilla

  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Peppermint Vanilla

  • 1 tbsp peppermint extract
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
